Clementine Sleebos started her channel when she was crazy young- like middle school young, but she’s stuck around long enough to amass over 28K subscribers. Now, she’s about to change up her content from makeup-focused to more vlogging and challenges. One thing’s for sure: the future is bright for this young creator! See what she had to say about her channel in this week’s Grapevine Community Spotlight.
You have almost 29K subscribers…did you expect to get to this point when you started your channel?
When I first started my channel, I didn’t know how far I was going to be able to get. It is still so surreal to me to see how many people have decided to subscribe to me. With that being said, I don’t think that having almost 29K at the moment has changed my content. I think that my content is something that I really enjoy making and I put my all into every video that I film and edit.
You’re so young! What made you decide to start a YouTube channel in 8th grade?
I started YouTube because I was obsessed with makeup. I came across the YouTube community and knew absolutely nothing about it. I had no idea people made videos constantly and uploaded it to their channels. However, I had seen tutorials here and there and really wanted to do them. Even when I was little, I would love to dress up and put lip gloss on every time my family and I would go out to dinner or just going out in general.
Do you expect that your subscriber base will change now that you’re doing different types of videos?
I feel like my subscriber base may change which honestly scares me a little. I have grown up to 29K because I do makeup and I feel like some people may only be expecting me to do makeup videos and nothing else. However, makeup isn’t something I enjoy that much anymore. Yes, I love doing my makeup sometimes but it isn’t one of my passions like it used to be. If you saw me at school you would see that I don’t put any makeup on and that shows that I’m just not as into it as I used to be. I used to love makeup to much that I wouldn’t leave my house without any on. It wasn’t that I was self conscious, because I wasn’t, it was that I just loved doing it so much. The main point is that I have grown up up a lot in the last few years of doing YouTube and I really have finally found myself. I love to vlog and make fun videos. I hope to acquire more subscribers in the future who like my new type of video style and hope to have the same support from my current subscribers.
What would you say to someone thinking of starting a YouTube channel?
If someone wants to start a YouTube channel, I say go for it. I don’t think you should ever second guess an idea you have. If you want to do something, do it. You shouldn’t let anyone stand in your way or say that you can’t because YouTube is a huge part of our future and our generation and you never know who will take it big and create a career out of it. Also, you shouldn’t start a channel just because you think you will get a lot of money or free things. A lot of people that I talk to say that they want to start a channel because they see that I make money and I get things sent to me but everything that I do takes a lot of hard work. YouTube is not as easy as people think it is. Videos take hours to film and edit and you constantly have to think of new ideas to do.
Who are some of your favorite YouTubers to watch?
I watch so many YouTubers but I would definitely say my favorite people to watch are Jenn McCalister, Anthony Quintal, Andrew Lowe, and Andrea Russet. They all make really creative fun videos that I really love and enjoy watching. I am striving to make fun and entertaining videos in the future while I am changing up my channel.
How do you balance running a YouTube with school and other responsibilities?
Balancing my social life, YouTube, and school is one of the most challenging things to do. YouTube is like a full time job. Even though I love doing YouTube, it is a job and people like to say it’s not, but it is pretty much. It is definitely a huge passion of mine so that is why I love to do it but it definitely sometimes takes my focus away from school. I always have to get myself back on track because I just constantly want to work on YouTube videos and answer emails and do the things I love. I just try to schedule as much as I can. I will sometimes take like little breaks and go back and forth between YouTube and school work.
